Store no more
St Ninians "Nailworks corner" is changing again. The old Somerfield store is being demolished to make way for a new LiDL store. Over the years the store has been branded (Coopers) Fine Fare, Gateway, and Somerfield. At one point ASDA were also rumoured to be interested in developing the site, but there is no factual grounding for this rumour. Not that it would matter in any case as ASDA have been thwarted each and every time they have attempted to develop a site in Stirling. During the demolition, some of the original sign outline has been uncovered. The signs were raised shaped plastic boxes, lit from inside and mounted on a band of tiles. This section is the back wall of the cafeteria area.
A look along Weaver Row from the old car park entrance shows the size of the store, with the clock tower in the background.
The 1970's store had it's car park on the roof with vehicular acces via a ramp, and pedestrian access to the store via lifts and stairs. This was possibly the first store in Stirling with a public elevator. |
